Explosions and Gunfire were reported at the Aden airport in southern Yemen after the plane carrying the new power-sharing government cabinet members from Saudi Arabia arrived.

Video AlHadath showed a large explosion while passengers disembarked from the plane followed by sporadic gunfire.

The cabinet members were mostly unharmed but at least five people were reported dead including the Deputy Minister of Transport in Aden and another local official while many more people were wounded.

The cabinet members, including Prime Minister Maeen Abdulmalik, were reportedly evacuated to Aden’s presidential palace.

Yemeni security forces now launched a wide search campaign in residential neighborhoods near the airport and closed off roads to search for the attackers.

Arab media outlets have reported that the death toll rose to 25 but no official figures have been released by the Yemeni government so far.

The explosions were reportedly caused by three mortar shells striking the airport’s hall.

“We and the members of the government in the temporary capital of Aden and everyone is fine. The cowardly terrorist act that targeted Aden airport is part of the war being waged against the Yemeni state and our great people, and it will only make us more resilient to fulfill our duties until the coup is ended, and restore the state. Our prayer to all the victims of this terrorist act.” tweeted Yemen’s Prime Minister Maeen Abdul Malik Saeed.

This is a developing story.
