Argentina’s Congress has legalized abortions up to the 14th week of pregnancy, becoming the largest nation in Latin America to legalize abortion.

Senators voted in favor of the bill after a marathon session with 38 in favor, while 29 were against it and one abstention.

Until now, abortions in Argentina were only permitted in cases of rape or when the mother’s health was at risk.

The Chamber of Deputies had approved the bill earlier this month.

As a result, large crowds of campaigners both for and against abortion had gathered outside Congress in the capital Buenos Aires, following the debate through the screen.

When the final results has been released, the pro-choice campaigners has celebrated.
