Israeli authorities have shut down Ramon prison due to Covid-19, a Palestinian NGO said on Sunday.

The Palestinian Prisoner Society said that the closing of the prison was “a serious indication of a possible wide outbreak of the pandemic among the detainees.”

According to Israeli Public Security Minister Amir Ohana, prisoners were not priority for the Covid-19 vaccine.

There are around 140 Palestinian prisoners who tested positive for the coronavirus since April.

Palestinian Prisoners’ Affairs Commission spokesperson Hassan Abed Rabbo said, “Israeli occupation government is fully responsible for the health and lives of the prisoners, and for not taking real measures to protect them from the outbreak of the coronavirus.”

Ohana said that the vaccine will be given to the prison administration first, while the prisoners will be immunized “in accordance with the progress of vaccinating the general public.”
