The US Embassy in Beijing has urged China to immediately release 12 Hong Kong fugitives and to permit them to depart the country.

The US Embassy in Beijing has urged China to immediately release 12 Hong Kong fugitives and to permit them to depart the country.

In a statement on Monday, a spokesperson for the US Embassy said, “Their so-called ‘crime’ was to flee tyranny.”

Out of the 12 fugitives, 10 are now on trial in the city of Shenzhen facing charges of illegal border crossing and organizing it.

The spokesperson also said, “Communist China will stop at nothing to prevent its people from seeking freedom elsewhere.”

Chinese authorities intercepted the fugitives while on their way to Taiwan on August 23.

Meanwhile, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian said, “China firmly rejects the U.S. side’s fact-distorting comments.”

“We urge the U.S. side to earnestly observe international law and basic norms governing international relations, and immediately stop interfering in China’s internal affairs and judicial sovereignty under the pretext of Hong Kong-related issues,” the Chinese spokesperson added.
