Ship Sinks off Tunisia, 20 Migrants Dead

Around 20 migrants have died as their boat sunk off the coast of Tunisia, authorities reported on Thursday.

Around 20 migrants have died as their boat sunk off the coast of Tunisia, authorities reported on Thursday. 

The migrants were trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea to reach Lampedusa in Italy. 

Spokesperson for the National Guard Ali Ayari said that there were about 45 migrants on board the ship, which was overloaded. Coast guard were able to rescue five people so far.

Ayari reported, “The boat sank about six miles from the coast of Sfax. Twenty bodies were recovered, five others were rescued, and all are from sub-Saharan Africa.”

Tunisian city of Sfax has been a main jump-off point for migrants and refugees leaving behind their war-torn countries.

The International Organization for Migration has reported that there were more than 3,000 people who died during migration this year, despite the pandemic, most of whom while on their way to Europe.
