The Chilean research base in Antarctica reported 36 cases of COVID-19, the first in the continent.

According to the Chilean army, the infected in the General Bernardo O’Higgins Riquelme base were 26 military personnel and 10 maintenance staff.

“Thanks to the timely preventive action … it was possible to relieve said personnel, who, after being subjected to a medical control and the administration of a PCR test … turned out to be positive for COVID-19,” said the Chilean Army.

Aside from the base personnel, three crew members on a ship providing support to the base tested positive after coming ashore.

The infected personnel have been evacuated to the city of Punta Arenas in Chile to undergo quarantine and treatment.
