An “outlaw group” has attacked Baghdad’s Green Zone, near the US Embassy on Sunday, which caused damage to buildings, wounding one Iraqi soldier, Iraqi military said.

The U.S. Embassy Baghdad said, “The U.S. Embassy confirms rockets targeting the International Zone resulted in the engagement of Embassy defensive systems. There was some minor damage on the Embassy compound but no injuries or casualties.”

The embassy added that there has been reported damage to residential areas near the embassy and “possibly some injuries to innocent Iraqi civilians.”

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo issued a statement saying, “The United States strongly condemns the latest attack by Iran-backed militias on the International Zone in Baghdad. While no Embassy personnel were harmed, the attack caused at least one Iraqi civilian casualty and damaged Iraqi civilian property. We wish those hurt a speedy recovery.”

Pompeo also called on to Iraqis to “ support their government’s efforts to reinforce Iraq’s sovereignty, to bring to justice those responsible for these reprehensible attacks and ensure that all the currently Iran-backed militias are under state control.”

A spokesperson for Iraqi’s president said that the attack on the Green Zone was a “terrorist act,” which endangered the lives of its citizens and undermined “Iraq’s international reputation and its foreign relations.”
