The former Governor of the Mexican state of Jalisco, Aristoteles Sandoval, was shot dead on Friday in a restaurant bathroom in the beach resort of Puerto Vallarta.

During a press conference, the state Attorney General Gerardo Octavio Solis said Sandoval was dining with four other men before he decided to go to the toilet, where the killer shot him in the back.

While Sandoval didn’t died immediately, his bodyguards couldn’t evacuate him from the restaurant since their escape was blocked by more gunmen in the street outside, who opened fire and seriously injured on of the bodyguards. The former governor died later at a local hospital.

According to Solis, staff at the restaurant cleaned the crime scene, removing blood and bullet casings, and erasing video of the attack. “There are no clues – they practically swept the place clean,” he told Mexico’s main TV station Televisa. He pointed out that eight to 10 suspects were involved in the attack, but did not indicate who was responsible.
