Bangladesh Expresses Intention to Join India-Myanmar-Thailand Road Belt

Bangladesh has expressed its intent to join the India-Myanmar-Thailand trilateral highway project in a virtual summit between India and Bangladesh held on Thursday.

Bangladesh has expressed its intent to join the India-Myanmar-Thailand trilateral highway project in a virtual summit between India and Bangladesh held on Thursday. 

In a press briefing after the Bangladesh-India Virtual Summit, Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dr. A.K. Abdul Momen said, “Our trade and commerce will see a boost if the road is built. We need to be involved in the road belt considering our strategic interests.”

In a joint statement released, “ Bangladesh Prime Minister expressed keen interest in the ongoing India Myanmar Thailand trilateral highway project and sought support of India for enabling Bangladesh to connect with this project with a view to enhance connectivity between the regions of South and South East Asia.”

India, on the other hand has requested Bangladesh to allow the linking of West Bengal to Meghalaya through Bangladesh.

The 1,360-km project will connect Moreh in India, Bagan in Myanmar as well as Mae Sot in Thailand.
