Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell publicly acknowledged Joe Biden’s presidential victory for the first time on Dec. 15, a day after the Electoral College officially confirmed Biden’s win and six weeks after the elections held last November.

“Our country has officially a president-elect and a vice president-elect. The Electoral College has spoken. So today, I want to congratulate President-elect Joe Biden,” McConnell said from the Senate floor.

After speaking with McConnell in a call, Biden told reporters, “We’ve always been straight with one another and we agreed to get together sooner than later and I’m looking forward to working with him.”

McConnell reportedly also warned his fellow Republicans not to object the results of the Electoral College when the Congress confirms Biden’s victory on Jan. 6, saying it would be a “terrible move” for them.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer also warned Republicans not to object the results, telling them they should “follow Leader McConnell’s lead.”

“Our Republican colleagues, for the sake of our democracy, for the sake of the peaceful transition of power, should stop the shenanigans. Stop the misrepresentations and acknowledge that Joe Biden will be our next president,” Schumer said.

McConnell delivered his congratulations after listing “all the major wins the Trump administration has helped deliver for the American people,” including “economic prosperity,” “foreign policy,” and “perhaps most importantly” the confirmation of three conservative justices in the Supreme Court.

McConnell’s public recognition of Joe Biden as president-elect comes as Lame Duck President Donald Trump continues to refuse to concede his defeat.
