Germany’s Economy Minister Celebrates EU’s New Rules for Big Tech

Germany’s Economy Minister Peter Altmaier said on Wednesday morning that he welcomed the European Union’s draft about its new rules, aiming at curbing the powers of US tech giants including Apple, Facebook, and Google.

Germany’s Economy Minister Peter Altmaier said on Wednesday morning that he welcomed the European Union’s draft about its new rules, aiming at curbing the powers of US tech giants including Apple, Facebook, and Google.

“I am pleased that the European Commission is … putting forward new rules for digital markets. The German government celebrates this decision and guarantee full support to start executing these new rules as soon as possible,” Altmaier said in a statement.

According to a Business Insider report, the European Union’s new rules represent the most serious attempt by the 27-country bloc to tame tech firms that control roves of information and online platforms relied on by thousands of firms and millions of Europeans for their work and social interactions.

On Twitter, CNN’s Guillermo Arduino said “this situation will represent a serious test for the Biden administration, since it would be the first sign of how the US relationship with Europe will be in with this new government.”
