Fashion mogul Peter Nygård has been arrested in Winnipeg, Manitoba in Canada after US authorities have charged him with racketeering and sex trafficking.

Nygard, 79, was detained following his court appearance after Canadian authorities arrested him at the request of the US.

The acting US attorney Audrey Straus said Nygård been using his influence and businesses to groom and abuse victims in the US, Canada, and the Bahamas.

Nygard or his associates allegedly drugged their victims to ensure they did not resist and targeted those who came from disadvantaged backgrounds or had suffered abuse.

The FBI raided Nygard’s Manhattan offices earlier this year after 10 women sued him.

Some of the defendants mentioned that they were 14 or 15 years old when Nygard gave them alcohol or drugs and then raped them while Nygard Group employees, used force, fraud, and coercion to recruit them.

Nygard’s lawyer Jay Prober, said his client denies all allegations and blamed a conspiracy caused by a feud with a neighbor in the Bahamas.

“That is Mr. Nygard’s contention. This all stems from a conspiracy from the hedge fund billionaire Louis Bacon,” said Prober.

No date was set for Nygard’s bail hearing but he is due to return to court on January 13.
