Fiji and Tonga were preparing for the potentially catastrophic damage that is about to come as tropical cyclones Zazu and Yasa intensified off their coastlines on Wednesday.

Zazu, the north-east of Tonga’s capital Nuku’alofa, has experienced a category one system, with winds of up to 90km/h (55mph).

Meanwhile, Yasa, which is located north-west of Fiji’s main island Viti Levu, has already been upgraded to a category five cyclone, with winds of up to 270km/h.

Fiji are anticipating it to make landfall on Thursday or Friday.

Local authorities in both Fiji and Tonga have been advising residents to prepare for the potential damage winds and flash floods will create.

Fishing fleets have been ordered to go back to the port.
