United States to Begin COVID-19 Vaccinations on Dec. 14

The United States will start administering COVID-19 vaccinations on Dec. 14 as the first shipments travel across the states on Dec. 13, following the approval of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for emergency use authorization.

The United States will start administering COVID-19 vaccinations on Dec. 14 as the first shipments travel across the states on Dec. 13, following the approval of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for emergency use authorization.

Delivery service companies FedEx and United Parcel Service have begun delivering the first three million doses of the vaccines developed by Pfizer and BioNTech from the manufacturing facility in Kalamazoo, Michigan to 636 locations nationwide, Army Gen. Gustave Perna, chief officer of Operation Warp Speed, which is the vaccine development program of the Trump administration, said at a press briefing last Dec. 12.

“We expect 145 sites across all the states to receive the vaccine on Monday, another 425 sites on Tuesday, and the final 66 sites on Wednesday, which will complete the initial delivery of the Pfizer orders for vaccine,” Perna said.

According to Perna, state governments identified the distribution centers for the vaccine, which include hospitals and local pharmacies.

The delivery comes after the FDA issued the first emergency use authorization for the vaccine for individuals aged 16 years old and above last Dec. 11, following a recommendation from its advisory committee last Dec. 10.

“With science guiding our decision-making, the available safety and effectiveness data support the authorization of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine because the vaccine’s known and potential benefits clearly outweigh its known and potential risks,” FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research Director Peter Marks said.

FDA Commissioner Stephen Hahn called the authorization a “significant milestone” to combat the pandemic that has killed over 300,000 in the U.S.

The Unites States has recorded 187, 901 cases on Dec. 13, bringing the total to 16,737,267.
