Spain to Reach Herd Immunity by Late 2021

The Spanish government announced that the country will achieve herd immunity from COVID-19 by the end of summer 2021 if enough people are vaccinated by then.

During a Monday morning interview with El Publico, Spain’s Health Minister Salvador Illa said that a vaccination program will start in January and by the end of the summer more than two-thirds of the population 47 million will be vaccinated.

“In Europe, even if it is not the final end, we will be in a very different stage. That is why I think we are at the beginning of the end with this time horizon that I say, from five to six months. The key is to perform massive vaccinations so Spain could reach herd immunity and go back to our normal lives,” he told the newspaper.

However, Illa cautioned Spanish citizens against dropping their guard during the Christmas period. The country has been one of the worst-hit countries in Europe by the COVID-19.
