The famous Byron Bay beach has been washed away by severe weather in New South Wales, Australia over the weekend.

Footage of the Byron Bay’s Main Beach has shown that it has eroded, while trees collapsed along the shoreline.

Byron Shire mayor Simon Richardson said on Monday, “Right now around Byron, we’ve got some severe weather, massive swells, we’re watching our beach disappear.”

The Bureau of Meteorology has announced that dangerous rain and erosions still continue in the state and in southeast Queensland as of Monday morning.

Heavy rains and strong winds have intensified on Sunday as a storm pounds Australia’s coastal area, prompting flood warnings to residents across the state.

Floods and torrential rain are expected until Tuesday, the bureau says.

Richardson also said, “At this stage, it’s really out of hand. We’re under the pump and hopefully it will ease over the next couple of days.”

Meanwhile, the bureau also warned that major coastal erosions are ongoing in numerous beaches in northeast NSW and southeast Queensland.
