US tech giant Apple announced on Thursday afternoon that its Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook will speak at the United Nations’ Climate Ambition Summit on December 12th.

The summit is being held on the fifth anniversary of the international Paris climate agreement and ahead of United Nations talks in the year 2021 in Glasgow, Scotland. The Paris agreement has been designed to limit a rise in global temperatures to 1.5 degrees Celsius, which most scientists around the world agree it could stave off the worst effects of climate change.

Earlier this year, the American company said in a statement that it has become carbon neutral for its corporate operations and has released different plans to make its full supply chain and product lineup carbon neutral by the year 2030.

On Twitter, CNN’s Guillermo Arduino said Cook’s presence at the summit “represents the step Apple wanted to take since the moment President Trump decided to leave the so-called Paris accord.”
