Apple Daily Owner Jimmy Lai Charged under Security Law

Hong Kong pro-democracy Apple Daily owner Jimmy Lai has now been charged under the national security law.

Hong Kong pro-democracy Apple Daily owner Jimmy Lai has now been charged under the national security law.

Lai was charged with “collusion with a foreign country or with external elements to endanger national security.” The law punishes those convicted with a life sentence.

On December 2, Lai was arrested along with other Apple Daily executives and were slapped with fraud charges.

The media magnate was also denied bail regarding his fraud charge this month, with the next hearing scheduled for April next year detaining Lai pending the hearing.

American Committee to Protect Journalists’ (CPJ) Steven Butler said, “China appears intent on crushing what remains of Hong Kong’s much vaunted tradition of press freedom. Lai should be freed at once, and all the charges he is facing should be dropped.”

Lai is scheduled to appear in court on Saturday to face the current charge.
