The International Olympic Committee (IOC) Adds Breakdancing and New Sports to Summer Olympic Games

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has added breakdancing alongside skateboarding, sport climbing, and surfing to the Summer Olympic Games which would be held in Paris in 2024.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has added breakdancing alongside skateboarding, 3-on-3 basketball, sport climbing, and surfing to the Summer Olympic Games which would be held in Paris in 2024.

Breakdancing was first proposed in 2019 as a new Olympic sport in Paris and was previously a medal event in the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires last 2018.

Skateboarding, 3-on-3 basketball, sport climbing, and surfing were supposed to be added to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics but was never done due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Softball and baseball, are also due for a return for the first time since Beijing in 2008 with baseball being male-exclusive while softball for females.

The IOC Paris Games organizers explained that they wanted to deliver a program that is more modern and will attract new and younger audiences.

“With this program, we are making Paris 2024 fit for the post-corona world. We are further reducing the cost and complexity of hosting the Games,” said IOC president Thomas Bach.
