Hundreds of people from Eluru, a city in Andhra Pradesh’s West Godavari, reported mass cases of an unknown illness with symptoms like nausea and foaming at the mouth.

Hundreds of people from Eluru, a city in Andhra Pradesh’s West Godavari, reported mass cases of an unknown illness with symptoms like nausea and foaming at the mouth.

“The people who fell sick, especially the children, suddenly started vomiting after complaining of burning eyes. Some of them fainted or suffered bouts of seizures,” said a medical officer from the Eluru Government Hospital.

At least one person has died and 227 including 46 children have been hospitalized so far with most from the Kothapeta, Padamara Veedhi, Vangaya Gudem areas.

Little is known about the cause of such symptoms and was suspected to be caused by contaminated drinking water.

The symptoms of the mysterious illness reportedly persisted for 10 to 15 minutes while blood examinations have not revealed any problems.

State health officials in the West Godavari district said that 140 of the patients have returned home after treatment and some of those who remained are already in a stable condition.

Deputy Chief Minister for Medical and Health A.K.K. Srinivas for the city of Eluru explained that further testing revealed that the patients were not victims of water contamination.

India’s chief minister, Jaganmohan Reddy, said that special medical teams will be sent to Eluru to investigate the cause of the illness.
