Explosion Rocks Engen Oil Refinery in Durban

A massive explosion was reported at the Engen Refinery in Wentworth, Durban which left at least seven people injured.

A massive explosion was reported at the Engen Refinery in Wentworth, Durban which left at least seven people injured. 

KwaZulu-Natal emergency services spokesperson Robert McKenzie said the incident occurred 07:00 Friday morning and said fire and smoke could be seen billowing from the refinery.

“All relevant authorities have been informed and full cooperation has been provided. Engen will provide an update about the incident as soon as further information is available. Safeguarding the health, safety and well-being of our people, community and environment remains our utmost priority,” said Engen spokesperson Gavin Smith.

Video shared on Twitter have shown large pillars of flame erupting from the plant while dark smoke kept rising from the area. 

Paramedic Garrith Jamieson said that all of those injured were plant workers with six being treated for smoke inhalation and the other injured their hip in a fall while trying to escape the fire.

McKenzie said that the fire was already out after more than an hour but they are not yet sure how it started and if it was connected to an apartment fire nearby.
