The European Union (EU) has criticized China over an “irresponsible, insensitive” tweet that was about the Australian military personnel.

The regional bloc has revealed that it has addressed the issue directly with a Chinese vice-foreign minister.

Nabila Massrali, the spokesperson for Foreign Affairs & Security Policy of the EU, said the Australian government had investigated the Australian military personnel in Afghanistan and the claims of serious misconduct.

They are now taking action to address its findings.

China and Australia have been at odds over a number of problems over the past few years.

This includes the Turnbull government’s decision to exclude Chinese telcos Huawei and ZTE from Australia’s 5G network, as well as the introduction of foreign interference laws that were seen as targeting China’s activities.

However, these diplomatic ties have deteriorated sharply  when the Morrison government has had an early call for an independent international inquiry into the origin and handling of Covid-19.

This has influenced the idea of international weapons for investigations regarding the pandemic.

“We don’t intend to make Australia our target,”  Hua Chunying, the spokesman of China, said. “China urges Australia to review its security interest needs in an objective manner, enhance trust between regional countries, and contribute to regional security and stability instead of doing the opposite.”
