Hawaiian authorities arrested a couple over the weekend after allegedly boarding a flight despite knowing that they had tested positive for coronavirus.

According to the Kauai Police Department, Wesley Moribe, 41, and Courtney Paterson, 46, of Wailua, Hawaii, were aware that they had tested positive when they travelled from the San Francisco International Airport to Lihue Airport in Hawaii.

Upon arrival at the airport, the Hawaiian couple was instructed by the quarantine section to avoid boarding their United Airlines flight and undergo self-isolation.

However, they still violated the airport’s instructions and deliberately boarded their flight, together with their four-year-old son.

According to the Hawaii police, the two are now facing second-degree “reckless endangerment” charges for “placing the passengers of the flight in danger of death.”

A relative has taken their son home.

“The Kauai Police Department, working alongside our county and state partners, remain diligent in protecting the health and safety of our island,” Kauai Police Chief Todd Raybuck said in a press release. “We continue to request visitors and residents alike to follow the Governor’s Emergency Rules and take all necessary precautions to prevent the spread of COVID-19.”

A spokesperson for United Airlines said an investigation has been conducted.

The two were also banned from flying on United Airlines flights as a result of their negligence.

“The health and safety of our employees and customers is our highest priority, which is why we have various policies and procedures in place as part of a multi-layered approach to create a safer travel environment,” the spokesperson said.

“Prior to traveling, all United customers are required to complete a ‘Ready to Fly’ checklist acknowledging they have not been diagnosed with COVID-19 in the last 14 days.”
