The Brazilian national police, with the support of the Europol, carried out massive raids in Rio de Janeiro against the members of “a highly professional criminal syndicate,” arresting 45 suspects and searching nearly 200 houses all across the city.

The multinational operation revealed that this new drug-trafficking network was responsible for the annual importation of at least 45 tons of cocaine into the main European seaports, with profits exceeding $00 million over the course of six months.

Local media outlet pointed out that this new drug-trafficking network has no name, which made it difficult for authorities to investigate it. However, members of Brazil’s national police, speaking under condition of anonymity, told La Vanguardia that many of its members are part of some of the most powerful drug cartels in Brazil and Paraguay.

This international sting, led by the Belgian, Brazilian and Portuguese authorities, was carried out simultaneously by agencies from three different continents, with coordination efforts facilitated by the Europol.
