Brig. Gen. Hossein Dehghan has officially announced his bid for the 2021 Iran presidential election in a televised interview last Nov. 24.

“I consider myself a completely patriotic, revolutionary element and a person who has striven so far to offer my own intellectual, executive, and mental capacity to advance the goals and interests of the system and the revolution,” Dehghan said, as reported by the state-run Iranian Students’ News Agency.

According to sources, Dehghan likely has the support of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei to whom he currently serves as top military adviser, as well as the support of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps where he previously served as an officer.

Dehghan also said in the interview that he is not aligned to any political faction and that he seeks to provide “a space for consensus, understanding, and dialogue” at the national level and an “effective administrative system.”

Dehghan also previously served as the former defense minister during incumbent President Rouhani’s first term.

The presidential election is scheduled to be held on June 18, 2021.
