Belarus’ Olympic Body Faces IOC Punishment Amid Protests

The IOC is still deciding on the formal punishments for Olympic officials in Belarus after the repraisal reports about athletes and demonstrators against the country’s presidential election.

The IOC is still deciding on the formal punishments for Olympic officials in Belarus after the repraisal reports about athletes and demonstrators against the country’s presidential election.

Alexander Lukashenko has claimed a sixth presidential term after an August election.

Many citizens see this as rigged in his favor.

For 23 years, Lukashenko has also been the president of the Belarus Olympic Committee.

The International Olympic Committee responded that it was acting amid “the growing number of worrying reports concerning athletes, officials and sports in Belarus.”

For the past 16 weeks, street demonstrations have demanded for Lukashenko to resign.

As a result, thousands have been detained in a police crackdown.

According to IOC, it would consider the “appropriate measures or sanctions” against the Belarusian Olympic body for the potential breaches of the Olympic charter, without being able to name Lukashenko.
