Israeli Defence Minister Benny Gantz said that they are willing to engage in negotiations with the Palestinian group Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip.

According to Gantz, UN’s Nikolai Mladenov helped facilitate the resumption of coordination with the Palestinian Authority.

Gantz added that Israel was prepared “to arrive at a solution and contribute to improved conditions for the residents of Gaza” as long as Hamas releases captured IDF personnel.

Hamas has not yet responded to Gantz’s statement but last week, Palestinian Civil Affairs Minister Hussein Al-Sheikh said that relations with Israel would go back to normal.

Presently, Hamas holds four Israeli prisoners, including two soldiers captured during the Israeli war on Gaza in the summer of 2014 while the other two entered Palestinian territory years ago.
