The European Union has made a deal with Moderna, a biotech firm from the United States, for the supply of up to 160 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine.

“According to the results of clinical trials, this vaccine could be highly effective against COVID-10. Once the vaccine is indeed proven as safe and effective, every member state will receive it at the same time on a pro rata basis,” said von der Leyen.

According to Moderna, the experimental vaccine was 94.5% effective in preventing the infection of COVID-19 based on the data from a clinical trial.

The contract with Moderna aims to receive a supply of 80 million doses of the vaccine, with the choice of purchasing another 80 million.
