Fatal Beating of Black Man in Carrefour Sparks Protests in Brazil

Protests broke out in Brazil after a black man died after being beaten by Carrefour supermarket security guards in the Brazilian city of Porto Alegre on the eve of Friday’s Black Consciousness Day observations.

Protests broke out in Brazil after  Joao Alberto Silveira Freitas, a black man died after being beaten by Carrefour supermarket security guards in the Brazilian city of Porto Alegre on the eve of Friday’s Black Consciousness Day observations.

Freitas’ beating was captured on video by a bystander which showed security guards beating him while he was being held down before he was knelt down on his back. 

In response to Freitas’ death, protesters stormed a Carrefour in Brazil’s capital, Brasilia chanting “Black lives matter!” while protesters shouted “Carrefour Killer!” as a Black man lay still atop the conveyor belt of a checkout at the Rio de Janeiro branch.

Carrefour Brasil said on Friday it had terminated the contract of the security firm whose employees had killed Freitas.

Carrefour Brasil, the local unit of France’s Carrefour SA announced it deeply regretted what had happened. and that it would fire the employee in charge of the store during the time of the incident, and close the store as a mark of respect.

Nadine Anflor, the civil police chief for the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul said the security guards involved in the incident are already detained and are being investigated for homicide due to the victim’s asphyxiation and his inability to defend himself.
