At least four suspected militants were killed and two Indian policemen were injured after an early morning gunfight on a highway in the disputed region of Kashmir, police said on Thursday.

According to Police Inspector-General Mukesh Singh, the gun battle took place at a toll plaza in the Nagrota area of Jammu city.

Singh said that at least two members of the security forces were injured during the clash which lasted for three hours.

Paramilitary force spokesperson Moses Dinakaran said the authorities intercepted the Srinagar-bound truck that the suspected militants rode for routine checking.

The group then threw grenades and opened fire at the security forces, after which the authorities returned fire.

The truck then caught fire as some bombs hidden inside exploded.

The busy highway, which links Jammu to Srinagar, was closed for traffic as authorities launched a combing operation in the location of the shootout.
