President Donald Trump has fired top cybersecurity official Christopher Krebs after spending weeks to debunk the U.S. leader’s conspiracy theory regarding the credibility of the Nov. 3 presidential election’s results.
In a Twitter post, Trump announced Krebs’ dismissal from his position as the director of DHS’s Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA).
“The recent statement by Chris Krebs on the security of the 2020 Election was highly inaccurate, in that there were massive improprieties and fraud,” Trump said in a tweet on Tuesday.
“Therefore, effective immediately, Chris Krebs has been terminated as Director of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency.”
Twitter flagged both of the president’s tweets with labels indicating, “This claim about election fraud is disputed.”
The federal agency was responsible for the defense of the elections for protecting the elections that occurred in 2018 and 2020, as well as the security of federal computer networks and critical infrastructure facilities such as hospitals and power plants.
Krebs’ the ousting of Krebs follows CISA’s declaration that the recent presidential election was the most secure on in the U.S. history.
The top cybersecurity official has been targeted by Trump’s public criticisms since the Nov. 3 election due to CISA’s publication of Rumor Control blog, which debunks Trump and his allies’ false claims of election fraud and hacking.
“I’m proud of the work we did at CISA,” Krebs said during an interview with NBC News after getting fired by Trump. “I’m proud of the teammates I had at CISA. We did it right.”
After acknowledging his dismissal, Krebs tweeted: “Honored to serve. We did it right. Defend Today, Secure Tomrorow.”
