Hurricane Iota has made landfall in northeastern Nicaragua on Monday night as an extremely dangerous Category 4 storm.

According to the National Hurricane Center in Miami, Iota’s maximum wind speed was near 155 miles per hour on Monday.

By early Tuesday, Iota’s maximum wind speed had decreased to 130 miles per hour, however, the hurricane center still considers it as “extremely dangerous.”

Many Indigenous communities were evacuated throughout the weekend in Honduras and Nicaragua, where the military has posted on Twitter pictures of the soldiers carrying people to safety.

Hurricane Iota is expected to produce over 30 inches of rain in several areas of Honduras and Nicragua through Friday.

The intense rainfall could potentially lead to mudslides and flash flooding in elevated areas.
