The Russian Foreign Ministry has called on the Ethiopian government and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) to show restraint as the conflict between the two sides intensified.

The Russian Foreign Ministry has called on the Ethiopian government and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) to show restraint as the conflict between the two sides intensified.

“We are calling on all the sides to exercise restraint … We hope that all the problems will be settled, taking into consideration the need to maintain stability, territorial integrity, and unity of Ethiopia, this multinational and multiconfessional country,” said Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov in a statement.

The conflict started after the TLPF allegedly attacked a federal forces outpost which prompted  Ethiopia’s prime minister, Abiy Ahmed, to launch military operations against the group.

Just recently, the TLPF fired a volley of rockets at neighboring Eritrea’s capital, Asmara after it accused the state of siding with Abiy’s forces.

Abiy Ahmed’s government also announced it had captured another town in the northern Tigray region after it seized an airport the week before.

The Russian Foreign Ministry expressed that they hope that the conflict would be solved diplomatically soon.

“We assume that the central authorities, the government in Addis Ababa, will find proper methods to work with different regions, including Tigray, to secure civilian peace in the country,” Bogdanov added.
