Police have arrested Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights (EIPR’s) administrative manager Mohammed Basher after meeting with EU diplomats.

Police have arrested Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights (EIPR’s) administrative manager Mohammed Basher after meeting with EU diplomats.

The Swiss Embassy in Cario confirmed that the EIPR had met with 14 diplomats before Basheer’s arrest.

Basheer was reportedly arrested after midnight and was held for 12 hours until he appeared at the Supreme State Security Prosecution in Cairo’s Fifth Settlement district.

The Egyptian Supreme State Security Prosecution (SSSP) also interrogated the EIPR’s work and placed Basheer in pre-trial detention for 15 days.

“The detention of Mohammed Basheer is just the latest episode in the ongoing crackdown that aims to intimidate and scare legal and human rights professionals as well as… activists,” said the EIPR in a statement.

According to the EIBR, Basheer was charged with “joining a terror group” and “spreading false news” along with prominent human rights lawyers, activists, and journalists in a single case known locally as Case 855/2020.

The Egyptian government has not yet made a statement on the arrests.
