Trump Administration Approves $23bn Advanced Arms Sale to UAE

The Trump administration has approved the sale of more than $23bn in advanced weapon systems, which included armed drones and F-35 fighter jets to the United Arab Emirates

The Trump administration has approved the sale of more than $23bn in advanced weapon systems, which included armed drones and F-35 fighter jets to the United Arab Emirates.

“This is in recognition of our deepening relationship and the UAE’s need for advanced defense capabilities to deter and defend itself against heightened threats from Iran,” Mike Pompeo, the secretary of state, said in a statement.

Senator Chris Murphy, a Democrat, has criticized the arms sale to the United Arab Emirates.

He said that it could constrain the options of President-elect Joe Biden who has signalled that he will return the US to the Iran nuclear agreement.

Any deal that the United States makes to sell weapons in the Middle East must be able to satisfy decades of agreement with Israel and that the US-made equipment should not sabotage Israel’s “qualitative military edge.”

There must be a guarantee that US weapons were furnished for Israel and are “superior in capability” to those sold to its neighbours.

This was announced just days after Biden won enough states needed to take the presidency from Trump, who has made pro-Israel policies part of his re-election campaign.
