Slave Laborers Rescued from Illegal Gold Mine in Brazil

Brazil’s labor authorities have raided an illegal mining operation run by Raimunda Oliveira Nunes, who was blacklisted by authorities for engaging in slave labour.

Brazil’s labor authorities have raided an illegal mining operation run by Raimunda Oliveira Nunes, who was blacklisted by authorities for engaging in slave labour.

Labor inspector Magno Riga said his team has rescued 39 slave laborers from an illegal gold mine in Pará, Brazil, this month.

This is now the third raid carried out on illegal operations run by Nunes. In 2018, Nunes was found guilty of engaging people in slave labor and was punished with a five-year prison sentence. However, Nunes has yet to be jailed as she appeals the ruling, according to Riga.

Riga said that the operation was made to appear that the workers were self-employed.  “They tried to hide what was going on,” the inspector said, so that no direct employer could be responsible for the workers’ extreme working conditions.

Federal prosecutor Leonardo Juzinskas said there was convincing evidence linking Nunes to the operation, however investigations are still ongoing.
