Bahrain’s Longest Serving Prime Minister, Prince Khalifa Al Khalifa, Dies at 84

Bahraini Prime Minister Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, the only person to serve as Bahrain’s premier in history, has died at the age of 84.

Bahraini Prime Minister Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, the only person to serve as Bahrain’s premier  in history, has died at the age of 84.

According to Bahrain’s official news agency, he died at Mayo Clinic Hospital in the United States.

Due to this, Bahraini King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa has ordered a week-long mourning period in the country.

In August 1971, Khalifa was in office a day after Bahrain declared independence from Britain.

He is well-known in Bahrain as they credited him for modernizing the economy.

However, activists accused him of brutally quashing the country’s Arab Spring protests in 2011.

Khalifa was also known for his opulent wealth.

The Prime Minister was a royal in the Al Khalifa dynasty that has reigned in Bahrain for more than two centuries.

He is the son of Sheikh Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, who has taken control of the country for almost two decades while it was a British protectorate.
