Officials in the Mexican state of Guanajuato told local reporters during a Tuesday morning press conference that members of the Jalisco cartel killed journalist Israel Vazquez Rangel while he was covering a story.

In a statement, the state interior department said it lamented the killing of the El Samantino newspaper reporter and pledged that prosecutors would investigate the crime.

El Salmantino confirmed his death, pointing out that Vazquez Rangel was the victim of a “cowardly and atrocious attack … while he was carrying out his honorable work as a journalist.”

The newspaper also said that the reporter showed up at a crime scene in the town of Salamanca, where corpses and body parts had been left on a street. The cartel members were still there when he arrived in a car with the newspaper’s logo and opened fire on him.

Guanajuato, which is known for being the most violent state of the country and a farming and industrial hub in north-central Mexico, saw 3,453 slayings in the first nine months of this year.
