The Russian Armed Force’s Investigative Committee’s press service reported that Anton Makarov killed his commanding officer Major Sergei Ermolaev officer using an axe, then took his pistol and shot his comrades-in-arms.
The two other soldiers were later identified as corporal Sergei Kazhokin and Private Ninail Aktaliev while a private by the name of Firsov was also shot but was taken to a hospital.
Makarov escaped after his attack and hid around the base premises before getting arrested by police.
“The serviceman … was detained by law enforcement agencies. Investigative operations are being carried out”, announced the Western Military District.
A criminal case was opened against Makarov under Articles 105 and 226 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation for his actions.
Makarov’s motives were not immediately clear but the investigators said they will assign examinations to establish his mental state and will look further into the incident.
