Russian Military Helicopter Shot Down over Armenia, 2 Killed

Russia’s Defense Ministry reported that their Mi-24 attack helicopter was downed by fire from a man-portable air-defense system over Armenia.

Russia’s Defense Ministry reported that their Mi-24 attack helicopter was downed by fire from a man-portable air-defense system over Armenia.

The ministry says two servicemen were killed in the downing near the border with Azerbaijan while one was left injured.

Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry announced that it was Azeri forces that shot down a Russian helicopter and apologized to Moscow.

“The Azerbaijani side offers an apology to the Russian side in connection with this tragic incident,” said Azerbaijan foreign ministry.

Azerbaijan’s foreign ministry explained that the helicopter flew at a low altitude during hours of darkness and that “helicopters of the Russian air force had not been previously sighted in the area.”

The Azerbaijan foreign ministry said they are willing to compensate Moscow for the loss of the helicopter and its crew.

The incident occurred after Armenia confirmed the loss of Nagorno-Karabakh’s second-biggest city to Azerbaijani forces.
