The candidate of Puerto Rico’s pro-statehood New Progressive Party Pedro Pierluisi was elected as the island’s new governor as preliminary results released on late Saturday revealed he won the majority of votes.

Pierluisi received almost 33 percent of votes compared with nearly 31 percent obtained by the candidate of Popular Democratic Party Carlos Delgado, who supports the current territorial status, with 100 percent of precincts reporting.

The results come three days after Puerto Rico held general elections, and an unusual delay blamed on a record number of early and absentee votes that overwhelmed authorities. This was also the first time that the two main parties of the US territory fail to reach 40 percent of votes. “These are times to unite wills and purposes,” Pierluisi said in a statement.

The candidate of the New Progressive Party had claimed victory the night of the election as Delgado refused to concede, pointing out that his opponent was leading by a very slim margin and that thousands of votes still had not been counted.
