The inability of the people of Hong Kong to elect their leaders and all of their lawmakers has been at the core of the swelling opposition to Beijing’s rule, including the violent protests that broke out just last year.

Hong Kong’s democracy camp was under attack since Beijing has imposed a sweeping national security law in response to the protests that have occurred, including arrests for social media posts, activists fleeing overseas and political disqualifications.
