Russian Police Raid Offices of Opposition Leader Alexei Navalny

Russian police raided the Anti-Corruption Foundation (FBK) offices of opposition leader Alexei Navalny in Moscow and authorities charged FBK Director Ivan Zhdanov with contempt of court last Nov. 5.

Russian police raided the Anti-Corruption Foundation (FBK) offices of opposition leader Alexei Navalny in Moscow and authorities charged FBK Director Ivan Zhdanov with contempt of court last Nov. 5.

Nalvany and his social media team shared footage online of masked men in uniform entering his offices and his studio. The footage also showed the men applying tape over security cameras.

State news agency TASS reported around the same time of the raid that authorities charged Zhdanov of contempt of court without specifying which court order he was allegedly in contempt of.

State-run RIA News Agency said that the raid was in connection with the criminal case filed against Zhdanov.

“Previously, I was told that it was the bailiffs who came to look for 29 million rubles in the enforcement proceedings!” Zhdanov said in a tweet, most likely referring to a libel lawsuit won by catering magnate Yevgeny Prigozhin, who is linked to the Russian government, over alleged connections to contaminated school lunches.

A court in Moscow ordered FBK and Navalny supporter Lyubov Sobol to each pay 29 million rubles, which translates to $374,483, for the defamation of the catering company Moscow Schoolchild.

Previously, a court also found Zhdanov guilty of not removing a Youtube investigation implying former Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev of corruption. The court fined Zhdanov with 100,00 rubles, which translates to $1,300.

Navalny is currently recovering from a poisoning attempt in Germany, but the Russian government questions if he was indeed poisoned.
