Kosovo President Hashim Thaci Resigns to Face War Crime Charges

Kosovo’s President Hashim Thaci announced his immediate resignation to face charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity at a special court in The Hague.

Kosovo’s President Hashim Thaci announced his immediate resignation to face charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity at a special court in The Hague. 

“I will not allow under any circumstances that I appear before court as the president of the Republic of Kosovo. Therefore, in order to protect the integrity of the office of the president and the country, as well as the dignity of the citizens, I resign from the position of president of the Republic of Kosovo,” said Thaci.

Thaci had been the leader of the Kosovar Albanian underground army during the war of independence from 1998 to 1999.

Thaci and head of his Democratic Party, Kadri Veseli would be facing charges for  “nearly 100 murders” and other atrocities against “hundreds of known victims of Kosovo Albanian, Serb, Roma, and other ethnicities” and including political opponents.

The indictment came after the arrest of Jakup Krasniqi, a veteran Kosovo politician and former spokesman for the KLA.

The indictment against Thaci, Veseli, and others have not been released.nut was acknowledged by the Specialist Prosecutor’s Office.

The Specialist Chamber was established in The Hague in 2015 to handle cases of alleged crimes by KLA guerrillas during the war and is governed by Kosovo law but is staffed by international judges and prosecutors.
