Brazilian President’s Son Charged With Corruption

Prosecutors in the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro charged the son of President Jair Bolsonaro on Wednesday night with commanding a criminal organization and laundering money when he was the state lawmaker between the years 2007 and 2018.

Prosecutors in the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro charged the son of President Jair Bolsonaro on Wednesday night with commanding a criminal organization and laundering money when he was the state lawmaker between the years 2007 and 2018.

The charges were leveled against Senator Flavio Bolsonaro and 16 others. Prosecutors allege that the president’s son had people on his government-funded payroll who weren’t required to work and who had to return part of their salaries to him.

The senator denied on his Instagram account having committed any type of crime and said he was confident that courts in Brazil wouldn’t accept the charge.

One of his four lawyers named Rodrigo Roca said in a separate statement that the accusation is “inviable because it is devoid of any hint of proof. It’s nothing more than a macabre and badly engineered tale.”

Prosecutors also charged Flavio’s former driver Fabrício Queiroz, who was arrested in June. Queiroz is a longtime friend of President Bolsonaro, who said in 2019 that the two hadn’t spoken since the allegations surfaced.
