North Korean Captured at Border Attempting to Defect to South

A North Korean man has been captured while crossing the border, Wednesday morning at the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) in Goseong County, Gangwon Province.

A North Korean man has been captured while crossing the border, Wednesday morning at the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) in Goseong County, Gangwon Province.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said that the man was detected, attempting to cross the border on Tuesday night.

JCS said, “We safely captured the identified man at around 9:50 a.m., Wednesday. We will cooperate with relevant agencies to question the man about his border-crossing route and intention to defect”. JCS also added that there was no unusual movement on the part of the North Korean military.

The South Korean military’s response to the incident was criticized after the man was only captured 10 hours after he crossed the border.

A North Korean soldier also defected to South Korea in late 2019 while another was pursued and shot by fellow North Koreans in a dramatic escape in 2017.
