Iranian Foreign Minister Arrives at Venezuela to Start Latin American Tour

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif arrived in Venezuelan capital Caracas on Wednesday morning for the start of a tour in Latin American to increase relations with regional governments, amid efforts by the Trump administration to limit Iran’s influence in the western hemisphere.

In a statement, Venezuela’s foreign ministry said that “Mr. Zariff arrived at the Miraflores presidential palace where he met with Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza and president Nicolas Maduro to strengthen cooperation between the brave people of Iran and the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.”

The statement also pointed out that Zariff will visit Cuban capital Havana and will attend the inauguration of Bolivian president-elect Luis Arce.

Over the last few years, the Iranian regime has become a crucial ally for Caracas as the Trump administration tightens sanctions meant to force socialist Maduro from power.

Iran has sent two flotillas of fuel tankers to Venezuela this year to help resolve debilitating gasoline shortages in the nation, spurred by a collapse in its refining network, which have complicated fuel imports from more traditional trade partners.
