Ethiopian PM Abiy Ahmed has declared a state of emergency and ordered a military response to the opposition-held Tigray region following an attack on a federal forces outpost,

“Our defense forces … have been ordered to carry out their mission to save the country. The final point of the red line has been crossed. Force is being used as the last measure to save the people and the country,” said Ahmed.

Ahmed claimed that the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) raided a military camp in the region to try and steal military hardware.

The Federal Council of Ministers said that the incidents at Tigray are “endangering the constitution and constitutional order.”

The TPLF has ruled Ethiopia’s governing coalition for decades since armed fighters removed a Marxist dictator in 1991 before Ahmed took office in 2018 and drafted reforms.

The TLPF has not made any statements yet and no other details of the operations of the Ethiopian military have been disclosed after the internet and phone line were cut off in Tigray.
