Vatican Clarifies Pope’s Comments on Same-Sex Civil Union

The Vatican says that Pope Francis’ comments on same-sex civil union were taken out of context in a documentary film and did not signal a change in the doctrine to support same-sex marriage.

The Vatican says that Pope Francis’ comments on same-sex civil union were taken out of context in a documentary film and did not signal a change in the doctrine to support same-sex marriage.

The Vatican’s Secretariat of State sent a letter last Oct. 30 to papal representatives around the world who then sent it to bishops to clarify the two comments the Pope made in the film, “Francesco.”  Archbishop Franco Coppola posted the letter on his Facebook page.

According to the letter, the Pope’s comments were spliced from an unpublished 2019 broadcast interview with Mexico’s Televisa, contrary to film director Evgeny Afineevsky’s claims that the Pope’s comments came from a new interview.

“More than a year ago, during an interview, Pope Francis answered two different questions at two different times that, in the aforementioned documentary, were edited and published as a single answer without the proper contextualization, which has led to confusion,” the letter said.

The Vatican clarified in the letter that the comments were about his time as an Archbishop of Buenos Aires in 2010 when he opposed same-sex marriage law in Argentina but favored certain legal protections to gay couples.

“Therefore it is clear that Pope Francis has referred to certain state provisions, not certainly the doctrine of the Church, many times reaffirmed over the years,” the letter said.

According to the film’s website, the film, which premiered last Oct. 21 at the Rome Film Festival, explores the Pope’s work in several areas, including gender and identity justice and health and economic equality.
