Gunmen with automatic rifles have opened fire in central Vienna on the evening of Nov. 1, killing at least three people and injuring 15.

Three people have died from what Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz called a “hideous terror attack” when gunmen began shooting at six different locations near the Seitemsettengasse synagogue in Vienna, which was closed during the attack.

Fifteen people have been injured, including a police officer, and were taken to the hospital. Seven of them are in serious condition, according to Mayor Michael Ludwig.

Kurz also said that one gunman has been killed.

Interior Minister Karl Nehammer said that at least one gunman was on the run as the police conducts a city-wide manhunt.

Nehammer warned that the attackers were “heavily armed and dangerous” and said it was “the hardest day for Austria for many years.”

The number of attackers and the motivation for the shooting has yet to be made clear.

“We are currently going through difficult times in our republic. I would like to thank all the emergency services who risk their lives, especially today for our safety. Our police will take decisive action against the perpetrators of this hideous terrorist attack,” Kurz stated in a tweet.

“We will never allow ourselves to be intimidated by terrorism and will fight these attacks resolutely by all means,” Kurz added.

The death and injury tolls from the attacks are expected to rise.
